Security Incident Map
– Togo
Long spared from Sahelian unrest, Togo has experienced a rise in security risks since 2021 in its northern region, particularly in the Kpendjal prefecture, which shares a direct border with Burkina Faso. Armed groups linked to Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) have carried out several targeted attacks, striking both armed forces and civilians, deeply destabilizing local communities. One of the most serious incidents occurred on July 20, 2024, when an attack in Kpékpakandi resulted in the death of twelve Togolese soldiers. Other sporadic attacks reveal a strategy of gradual infiltration from Burkinabe territory. In response to this threat, Lomé has strengthened its military presence in the north by establishing a “military operations zone” and increasing patrols. Joint actions, notably within the framework of the Accra Initiative, have also been launched. Moreover, efforts are underway to raise awareness among the population and support local development, with the hope of consolidating stability. However, porous borders and the unstable situation in Burkina Faso complicate full securing of the area, leaving civilians exposed to violence, forced displacement, and rising community tensions.
