– Niger
Niger is experiencing a significant deterioration in security, particularly in the Tillabéri region in the west and the Dosso area near the unstable borders with Mali and Burkina Faso. Armed groups affiliated with the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS) and Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) continue their offensives against the Nigerien Armed Forces, as well as civilians and strategic infrastructure. The June 19, 2025 attack on the military base in Banibangou, attributed to ISGS, caused at least 34 soldier fatalities, dealing a severe blow to local defense capabilities. Shortly after, on July 15, 2025, a village near Téra was targeted in a deadly assault that left more than 25 civilian victims, often accused of supporting the army. Despite regular attempts by the Nigerien Armed Forces to regain control, vast areas remain under the influence of armed groups, who impose their law and maintain a chronic climate of insecurity. Civilians bear the direct consequences of these violences, caught between attacks, forced displacements, and reprisals. The porous borders with Mali and Burkina Faso facilitate insurgents’ movements, further complicating efforts to secure the region.
