Security Incident Map
– Benin
Benin has faced increasing security pressures since 2025, particularly in the northern regions bordering Burkina Faso and Niger. Armed groups affiliated with Jama’at Nasrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) have carried out several attacks against security forces. On January 8, 2025, an offensive on the Point Triple post, the tri-border area between Benin, Niger, and Burkina Faso (Alibori), resulted in between 28 and 30 deaths. On April 17, JNIM terrorists, arriving in large numbers and on motorcycles, attacked two positions of the Beninese Armed Forces within the W National Park, one near the Koudou Falls and the other at the 'Point Triple,', causing eight deaths and thirteen injuries among Beninese forces according to some sources, while JNIM claims to have killed 70 soldiers. In response, Benin has strengthened its capabilities through the expansion of Operation Mirador, military recruitment since 2022, modernization of surveillance tools with European support, and active participation in the Accra Initiative. Efforts are also underway to better secure protected areas and contain the terrorist expansion. Despite these advances, certain rural zones remain vulnerable to infiltration. While civilians are targeted less frequently than in neighboring countries, they sometimes suffer from the indirect effects of insecurity. Regional cooperation with Burkina Faso and Niger remains limited, but security dialogue channels are gradually being reactivated.
